Why Self-Care Isn't Enough: The Hidden Role of Trauma in Keeping You Stuck

As Self-Care Month approaches in September, many will focus on stress management, exercise, and mindfulness. But Judith A. Swack, Ph.D., a biochemist, immunologist, and author, suggests that even the most dedicated self-care routines may fail to address a deeper issue: unresolved trauma that keeps individuals trapped in recurring emotional and behavioral patterns.

Swack, who developed the Healing from the Body Level Up (HBLU™) methodology, argues that trauma is not just a mental phenomenon. It imprints in the body, creating layers of response that insight alone cannot unlock. "Until trauma is cleared at the body level, it keeps repeating and you keep reacting," she explains. "That's why you can understand your trauma, and still feel stuck in it." This insight challenges conventional wisdom that understanding triggers or practicing self-care should be enough to foster change.

The implications are significant. For millions who struggle with anxiety, self-sabotage, or chronic stress, the failure of traditional approaches may not be due to lack of effort but due to the nature of trauma itself. Swack's research into the structure of trauma reveals that it operates on multiple levels—conscious, unconscious, body, and soul—and that most therapeutic methods only address one or two. By leaving the body-level imprint untouched, patterns persist.

Swack's book, "Clear Trauma Now: The Powerful Solution for Getting Unstuck," recently earned the 2026 Silver Medal for Grief Books from the Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR). The book outlines techniques from her HBLU™ system, which integrates energy psychology with clinical practice to clear trauma at its root. Unlike conventional talk therapy, HBLU™ aims to reset the body's response to past events, potentially resolving issues in a few sessions.

To showcase the method, Swack will host a "Clear Trauma Now Live Healing" webinar series every Thursday in September. Participants can observe real-time trauma healing and learn self-help techniques. The sessions, which run from September 3 to 24, are designed to demonstrate how clearing trauma at the body level can lead to lasting change.

This approach underscores a critical point for self-care: it must go beyond surface-level relaxation. Deeper self-care involves addressing the physiological roots of stress and reactivity. For those who have tried meditation, exercise, and cognitive strategies without success, Swack's work offers a new path. By acknowledging that trauma is stored in the body, individuals can seek methods that directly target this storage, moving from being stuck to being free.
