Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Achieves 99.8% Iodine Purity, Prepares for Field Pilot

Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving 99.8% purity and over 90% recovery in laboratory tests using real oilfield brine. The company is now preparing for field pilot testing, marking a critical step toward commercial deployment and a potential shift in the North American iodine supply chain.

The Mueller process is designed to recover high-purity iodine from iodine-rich oilfield brine, a resource that is currently largely untapped. Voyageur's strategy aims to establish a domestic iodine supply for the radiology contrast media market, addressing the industry's reliance on imported iodine. For oil and gas producers and midstream water operators, this technology offers a new revenue stream from produced brine, which is typically disposed of at a cost.

Laboratory operations in Houston, Texas, have demonstrated the process using Anadarko and Permian Basin produced water, successfully generating clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, aligning with zero-liquid-discharge objectives. The company has constructed a mobile, field-capable pilot unit sized to treat 80,000 liters per day, with field testing scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. This transition from bench-scale to field operation is crucial, as it will provide real-world data under unaltered conditions.

Key achievements include continuous operation with real oilfield brine, validation of process parameters for scale-up, and completion of a preliminary design for a 200 metric ton per year plant. The company has also completed techno-economic and environmental assessments, supporting a low-cost operational and environmental profile. The pilot unit is expected to commence field testing in September 2026, providing data to support the design of modular, relocatable production units.

Voyageur's modular production concept involves deploying 200 tonne/year field units at multiple saltwater disposal sites, where iodine concentrate can be produced and transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging. Engineering work is progressing on the polishing, prilling, and packaging systems, with subsequent phases advancing through concept and basic design.

The strategic importance of this development extends beyond Voyageur. With billions of barrels of produced water handled annually, the potential to recover iodine represents a significant opportunity for the energy sector. Voyageur aims to be the first to field-prove an economically profitable iodine extraction process, contributing to the broader trend of brine valorization.

Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, emphasized the significance of the milestone: "Achieving 99.8% purity and greater than 90% recovery in laboratory testing using real oilfield brine provides meaningful technical validation as we prepare for field pilot operations. This work supports our broader strategy of building a secure, vertically integrated supply chain for radiology drugs."

The company plans to develop iodine production capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes per year to support its future contrast pharmaceutical production. This initiative complements Voyageur's Frances Creek barium project and planned manufacturing capabilities, positioning the company across key parts of the medical imaging contrast media value chain.

As field testing begins and operating data is collected, Voyageur will provide further updates. The success of the Mueller process could not only secure a domestic iodine supply but also transform how the oil and gas industry views produced brine, turning a liability into an asset.
