Fusion energy leaders Type One Energy and ExoFusion announced today an extended partnership aimed at optimizing stellarator performance through improved plasma edge confinement. The collaboration seeks to reduce the timeline to Commercially Viable Fusion (CVF) by addressing critical physics challenges in the boundary region of the plasma.
ExoFusion, based in Austin, Texas, brings expertise in confinement physics and intellectual property, while Type One Energy, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, contributes its leadership in stellarator engineering and science. The combined effort is expected to accelerate CVF by focusing on the edge region of the plasma, where confinement is often most challenging.

Type One Energy, founded in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, is developing an optimized stellarator fusion energy system using advanced manufacturing, computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets. Its FusionDirect™ program aims to deliver a fusion power plant within the next decade through a partner-intensive, capital-efficient strategy.
The extended partnership underscores the importance of physics collaborations in achieving CVF. By combining ExoFusion's novel materials and first-wall technologies with Type One Energy's stellarator expertise, the companies aim to overcome barriers that have historically slowed fusion development.
ExoFusion has received multiple federal grants, including from ARPA-E, SCIDAC, FIRE, and INFUSE, and works across various device types and fuel cycles. The company focuses on design, simulation, and scientific innovation to support the growing fusion industry.
