TORONTO — In a celebration of animal heroism, two dogs from Canada have been inducted into the 2026 Purina Animal Hall of Fame™, an honor reserved for pets who have demonstrated extraordinary courage and loyalty in protecting their owners from life-threatening dangers. The announcement, made by Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada, recognizes Chloe, a dog from Nipigon, Ontario, and Timber, from Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, for their remarkable actions that saved lives.
Chloe, a mixed-breed dog, became a guardian angel for her family when a black bear forced its way into their home. The incident occurred when Chloe's owner, a woman, was home alone. The bear broke through a door, but Chloe immediately sprang into action, barking and placing herself between the intruder and her owner. She alerted her husband, who was in another part of the house, and together they managed to confine the bear to the basement until police arrived. Chloe's quick thinking and fearless defense prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. Her owners credit her with saving their lives and protecting their home.
In Nova Scotia, Timber, a Labrador retriever, demonstrated his lifesaving instincts when his owner fell through the ice on a frozen lake. The owner, who had been walking Timber, suddenly broke through the ice and was plunged into freezing water. Timber immediately grabbed her by the arm and pulled her forward, using his body and harness to drag her toward safety. As she struggled to climb out, Timber's harness caught on branches, giving her the leverage she needed to pull herself onto solid ice. She later said, "I owe my life to Timber. He knew exactly what to do." The rescue was a testament to Timber's strength and unwavering loyalty.
The Purina Animal Hall of Fame, established in 1968, has honored more than 200 dogs, cats, and horses for their heroic deeds. The induction ceremony, held in Toronto, celebrates the incredible bond between pets and their owners, and the profound impact animals can have on human lives. "These two dogs exemplify the bravery and devotion that we celebrate at Purina," said a spokesperson for Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada. "Their stories are a reminder of the extraordinary ways animals protect and enrich our lives."
The announcement also highlights the importance of recognizing the roles pets play in our safety and well-being. Both Chloe and Timber's stories have resonated with the public, showcasing how animals can be true heroes in times of crisis. Their actions have not only saved lives but also inspired others to appreciate the loyalty and courage of their own pets.
