Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has provided an update on its previously announced proposed strategic equity investment of approximately US$35.6 million by the U.S. Department of War (DOW) to support exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in northwestern Alaska. The company confirmed that discussions with the DOW remain ongoing and that the letter of intent signed in October 2025 remains in effect as both parties continue to advance negotiations.
The proposed funding is intended to support continued exploration and development activities at the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects, which are part of the Ambler Mining District, one of the richest and most-prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. The district hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. The exploration focus has been on the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both located within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.
Trilogy Metals holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals LLC, which owns a 100 percent interest in the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects. In December 2019, South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, exercised its option to form a 50/50 joint venture with Trilogy Metals. Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities.
The significance of this investment lies in the strategic importance of securing domestic sources of critical minerals like copper, zinc, and cobalt, which are essential for national security and the transition to clean energy. The U.S. Department of War's interest in supporting these projects underscores the growing recognition of the need to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains for critical minerals. If finalized, the investment would provide substantial funding to advance exploration and development, potentially accelerating the path toward production and enhancing the United States' mineral independence.
This update comes as the company continues to navigate the complexities of permitting and development in Alaska, balancing economic potential with environmental stewardship and community relations. The ongoing discussions with the DOW signal a strong partnership between the public and private sectors to bolster domestic mineral production. Investors and stakeholders will be closely watching for further developments, as the outcome could have significant implications for the company's future and the broader critical minerals landscape.
