The Italian Barrel Earns 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2026. The award, part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, recognizes restaurants with exceptional wine programs that enhance the dining experience.

According to the announcement, the restaurant industry is evolving as diners become more selective about their drinking choices. "As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs," said Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator. The awards celebrate 4,012 restaurants worldwide that continue to elevate the wine experience for guests.

Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel, expressed their gratitude: "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course. This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."

Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards were launched in 1981 and feature three levels: the Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence, and Grand Award. The Italian Barrel earned the Award of Excellence, which requires a wine list of at least 75 selections with a well-chosen assortment of quality producers that complement the menu in price and style.

The Italian Barrel, located at 1240 Decatur Street, is known for its seasonal pastas and deeply Italian wine program. The restaurant was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now stewarded by Lori and Kevin Cates. Guests can enjoy indoor and heated outdoor seating, and reservations are available via italianbarrelfq.com or OpenTable.

Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026. For more information on the awards, visit WineSpectator.com/Restaurants, where winners can be searched by name, location, award level, cuisine, wine specialties, and pricing. The free Restaurant Awards app for iPhone and iPad also profiles winners.

This recognition underscores The Italian Barrel's dedication to providing a memorable wine experience, reflecting broader trends in the restaurant industry where wine programs are increasingly central to dining.
