The Overwatch Positioning Network operates by having aircraft send sensor data to Overwatch through an API, receiving positioning information back in approximately one-third of a second. This process requires no additional equipment or software installed on the aircraft, as all computation is performed in data centers. The network is designed to expand across multiple geographic regions and automatically scale compute capacity as the number of connected aircraft increases. This cloud-based approach could enable large numbers of drones to obtain GPS-independent latitude and longitude information without the need to install positioning payloads on each individual aircraft, thereby reducing cost and complexity.
The launch comes at a time when GPS-denial capabilities are proliferating. In recent conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, both sides have employed electronic warfare to disrupt GPS signals, rendering many commercial drones unusable. SPARC AI expects Ukraine to play an important role in validating Overwatch at operational scale, and has invited Ukrainian drone manufacturers and other stakeholders with which it has existing engagements to access the network. This real-world testing is crucial for demonstrating the system's reliability and effectiveness under actual combat conditions.
SPARC AI's technology leverages the low-cost inertial sensors already present in commercial drones, transforming them into precision instruments without additional hardware or external signals. This software-only approach is designed to provide GPS-denied capability at the scale and cost required for modern drone operations. The implications are far-reaching: militaries could maintain situational awareness and strike capabilities even when GPS is compromised, while commercial operators could ensure safer and more reliable operations in areas with poor satellite coverage.
The company also plans to attend the MSPO defense industry exhibition in Poland beginning Sept. 8, where it has scheduled meetings with several European drone original equipment manufacturers. This outreach is part of its strategy to expand the Overwatch Positioning Network into additional allied markets, potentially creating a broad ecosystem of drones that can operate independently of GPS.
