The 2026 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books featured a heartwarming children's story that emphasizes inclusion and perseverance as author Lorena Gomez-Maese introduced her book, The Spanish Swan Ballet, at the University of Southern California campus on April 18–19. Published by MainSpring Books, the story follows Faith, a young girl with a disability who dreams of becoming the next "Spanish Swan" in Granada, Spain. With guidance from her teacher, La Maestra, Faith learns that true achievement comes from perseverance and self-belief, ultimately earning the title she admires.
Gomez-Maese shared the inspiration behind her narrative, rooted in the traditions and cultural experiences of her upbringing. The book encourages young readers to embrace their unique abilities and recognize that physical limitations do not define potential. The festival, which draws over 150,000 visitors annually, provides a platform for diverse voices and stories that inspire readers of all ages. Attendees had the opportunity to meet the author and explore how storytelling can foster empathy and acceptance.
The Spanish Swan Ballet is available on Amazon. More information about the book and its message can be found on the author's website. An exclusive interview with Gomez-Maese is also available on YouTube.
