SoulfulDate Survey Reveals User Preferences for Icebreakers: Efficiency vs. Personalization

SoulfulDate has published findings from a voluntary survey of approximately 2,300 platform members on how they use Icebreakers, a built-in feature that provides pre-written conversation starters. The survey, conducted from April to June 2026, reveals a nearly even split between users who send the default template unchanged and those who customize it before sending. Among respondents, 52% used the template without modification, 41% modified it, and 7% said their approach varies depending on the profile.

The data highlights the trade-off between efficiency and self-expression in digital communication. Among those who use the default template, 36% said the template feels sufficient to start a conversation, 33% prefer saving time, 12% said it already says what they would have written, and 19% expressed uncertainty about what to write. The latter group aligns with research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking that found individuals with higher social anxiety are less likely to initiate contact even when tools are available.

The survey also examined sending behavior. 43% of users typically select three recipients per session, the midpoint of the available range, while only 11% send to the maximum of five. Notably, users who send to five recipients are 16 percentage points more likely to use the default template (68% vs. 52%), suggesting that broader outreach correlates with prioritizing efficiency.

Customizers, on the other hand, are motivated by personalization: 54% want the message to feel more personal, 23% want to reference something specific from the recipient's profile, 15% feel more comfortable sending something self-written, and 8% are dissatisfied with the default tone. Overall, 76% of respondents describe the post-send experience as confident or neutral, positioning Icebreakers as a low-friction entry point.

The implications extend beyond SoulfulDate. The findings underscore a fundamental tension in digital communication: the desire for convenience versus the need for authenticity. As platforms increasingly offer automated or templated options, understanding user motivations is critical for designing features that cater to diverse preferences.

A SoulfulDate product team representative commented, "The split we see reflects something broader about how people approach a first message. Some value speed and simplicity, others want specificity. Understanding these groups shapes our thinking."

The survey collected no personally identifiable information, with responses stored independently and aggregated. All respondents were registered, active members who had used Icebreakers at least once. Participation was opt-in, so results reflect engaged users and may not represent the broader membership.
