New Book Offers Hope and Biblical Insight for Grieving Hearts

In the wake of profound personal tragedy, Dr. Chuck F. Betters, founder of MARKINC Ministries, has released a new book titled "Learning to See When the Lights Go Out." The book, rooted in sermons he preached immediately following the death of his sixteen-year-old son, Mark, offers an honest and biblical perspective on grief, suffering, and hope.

Dr. Betters' journey into this deeply personal territory began on a warm summer evening when he stood in his backyard, reflecting on God's faithfulness throughout his life. Days later, a phone call delivered the devastating news: "Your son has been in an accident. You need to come now." The loss of his son shook the foundations of his faith, prompting questions that many grieving individuals grapple with: Can we trust God in the midst of overwhelming tragedy? How do God's love and sovereignty coexist with such pain?

The book addresses these questions with remarkable transparency, drawing from the sermons Dr. Betters preached in the weeks following Mark's death. It does not shy away from life's hardest questions but walks readers through them, demonstrating that even the deepest pain can become a place where God's faithfulness shines most brightly. "I hope readers discover hope in the middle of their own crisis," said Dr. Betters. "Our journey has taught us that suffering does not have the final word. God does."

This conviction has shaped Dr. Betters' ministry for decades. Following Mark's death, he and his wife Sharon founded MARKINC Ministries, an organization dedicated to bringing help and hope to hurting people worldwide. The mission continues through counseling, teaching, writing, and speaking. "What began as our greatest loss became a calling to help others navigate theirs," said Dr. Betters.

With nearly five decades of pastoral experience, Dr. Betters has served churches in Philadelphia and Delaware, founded Red Lion Christian Academy, and pastored Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church for over thirty years. He is also the author of Teaching Them Young and Harlots & Heroines, and coauthor of Treasures of Faith. His writing journey, inspired by Charles Spurgeon, can be summarized in three words: loss, hope, purpose.

Now living in Florida, Dr. Betters continues to lead MARKINC Ministries and enjoys time with his family. For readers facing grief or unanswered questions, this book offers more than sympathy; it provides the steady assurance that God remains faithful even in life's darkest valleys.
