Marks & Harrison, a law firm with a history spanning over 100 years in Virginia and Washington DC, has announced its first-ever Driver Safety Scholarship Contest. The contest invites students to submit essays or videos addressing the dangers of distracted driving, with a combined $4,200 in scholarship funds awarded to the top three entries. The initiative seeks to promote safety and support students' educational pursuits.
According to the firm, distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents nationwide. By engaging students in creative and thoughtful submissions, the contest aims to educate communities on practical ways to reduce distracted driving-related incidents. The firm emphasizes its commitment to community safety, leveraging its legal expertise to foster awareness among young drivers.
The contest is open to graduating high school seniors in Virginia and rising college freshmen enrolled in institutions within Virginia or Washington DC, including those attending two-year or four-year schools. Entrants must submit an original essay of at least 1,000 words or a video essay between 5 and 6 minutes in length. Submissions must address the question: "How can we educate our community about the dangers of distracted driving, and what are some practical ways we can drastically reduce distracted driving-related accidents?" The deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025.
Entries will be judged on originality and creativity by a panel, with the first-place winner receiving a $2,000 scholarship, second place $1,200, and third place $1,000. Winners will be announced on Monday, June 2, 2025, and their submissions will be published on the firm's website and social media platforms. Only one entry per student is permitted.
