In a society where grief is often met with well-meaning but impersonal advice, Jo Ann Tilton's new book, Today, I Bought Bananas, stands out as a raw, candid, and deeply personal account of widowhood. Published by Clay Bridges Press, the book offers companionship and hope to women navigating life after the loss of a spouse, filling a void that Tilton herself encountered when she became a widow.
Tilton's journey began suddenly with the unexpected death of her husband, a fallen firefighter. Shocked and grieving, she searched for a practical book written by someone who truly understood what it meant to become a widow. "When I became a widow, I went looking for a 'how-to' book," Tilton said. "All I found were grief books written by very educated authors who had a lot of head knowledge, but no heart knowledge. You only gain heart knowledge by walking the path." That unmet need inspired her to write the book she wished she had found.
Today, I Bought Bananas explores the loneliness, uncertainty, and ordinary moments that take on new significance after the death of a spouse. Even a routine task such as buying groceries can reveal how dramatically life has changed. "This book is about real happenings from a real widow who has lived the experience," Tilton said. "I hope widows will know they are not alone in their feelings, and I hope others will understand the widows in their lives better."
Tilton's understanding of widowhood extends beyond her personal experience. As the Insurance Coordinator for Katy Independent School District, she has supported and counseled hundreds of widows while processing life insurance claims following the deaths of their spouses. Her work has given her a unique perspective on both the emotional and practical challenges families face after loss. She is also the founder and leader of 'The Journey Girls', a widow-support group of approximately 40 women who gather regularly for friendship, encouragement, faith, and community. Through the group, Tilton has helped women face the difficult road of widowhood without walking it alone.
Tilton describes her writing journey in three simple words: "God guides me." Her Christian faith is woven throughout her life and service as she seeks to point others toward Christ through her words, compassion, and example.
Although Today, I Bought Bananas speaks directly to widows, it also offers valuable insight to relatives, friends, church leaders, and community members who want to better understand and support the widows in their lives. Tilton's message to women facing an unfamiliar future is clear: You are not alone. Healing may not happen all at once, but it is possible to continue moving forward one day, one step, and one small moment at a time.
