Greenland Mines Seeks to More Than Double Sarfartoq Rare Earth Footprint

Greenland Mines Ltd (NASDAQ: GRML) has applied to the Government of Greenland for a new exploration license covering approximately 262 square kilometres immediately east of its existing Sarfartoq license. If granted, the new license would increase the company’s controlled footprint at Sarfartoq from approximately 192 square kilometres to approximately 454 square kilometres, more than doubling its position across the known rare earth and carbonatite district. The move underscores the company’s ambition to become a larger player in the Western critical minerals supply chain.

Greenland Mines plans to pursue a two-track strategy at Sarfartoq, advancing the ST1 neodymium-praseodymium rare earth deposit while evaluating known satellite targets and exploring the broader district. The ST1 Hybrid Mineral Resource Estimate comprises 6.9 million tons of Indicated Mineral Resources grading 1.60% total rare earth oxides (“TREO”) and 5.3 million tons of Inferred Mineral Resources grading 0.96% TREO. The Initial Assessment includes a high-case pre-tax NPV of approximately $2.05 billion. The newly applied-for area is not included in the current ST1 resource estimate or economic analysis and remains an exploration opportunity subject to approval by the Government of Greenland.

The application is significant because it could substantially expand Greenland Mines’ resource base beyond the already defined ST1 deposit. The ST1 project has a pre-tax net present value of up to $2.05 billion, according to the company’s initial assessment. By adding a large, underexplored land package adjacent to ST1, Greenland Mines could potentially extend the mine life, increase annual production, or develop additional deposits that feed into a central processing facility. That would enhance the project’s economies of scale and could make it more attractive to strategic investors and off-take partners.

Moreover, the expansion aligns with broader Western efforts to secure diversified and reliable supply chains for rare earth elements, which are essential for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense applications. Neodymium-praseodymium are key components in high-strength permanent magnets. As geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions disrupt traditional supply routes, projects like Sarfartoq in stable, Western-aligned jurisdictions gain strategic importance. Greenland Mines describes itself as a Western-aligned critical-minerals developer advancing the Sarfartoq neodymium-praseodymium rare earth project in southwest Greenland and the Skaergaard palladium-platinum-gold project in southeast Greenland.

The company’s strategy is focused on advancing high-quality Greenlandic mineral assets capable of supporting diversified and secure Western critical-minerals supply chains. For investors, the license application represents a low-cost option on district-scale exploration upside. If approved, the new ground could host additional carbonatite intrusions similar to ST1, which may contain rare earth mineralization. The company will need to conduct exploration work, including mapping, sampling, and drilling, to determine whether any satellite targets are economically viable. That work would be subject to permitting and could take several years. However, the potential to more than double the project’s footprint at a time when rare earth prices are volatile but demand is rising could be a catalyst for the stock.
