GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has welcomed the launch of a new global mpox vaccine stockpile, a move that could transform the international response to future outbreaks. The stockpile, announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) on September 2, is funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and coordinated through the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, which includes partners such as WHO, UNICEF, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The initiative began operations on August 27 and is scheduled to become fully operational later this month, establishing a long-term mechanism for equitable vaccine access during mpox outbreaks.

Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax, emphasized the importance of this infrastructure, stating, "Establishing a dedicated global mpox vaccine stockpile is an important step forward in moving from reactive outbreak response toward sustained preparedness." He also noted that equitable access requires durable procurement infrastructure, sufficient vaccine supply, and rapid delivery capabilities. GeoVax is positioning its mpox vaccine candidate, GEO-MVA, as a potential contributor to this effort, with plans to initiate a pivotal Phase 3 study in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The stockpile addresses barriers to vaccine access highlighted during the 2024 mpox public health emergency. WHO has identified strategic objectives for the stockpile, including securing a robust product mix and supporting market-shaping efforts to promote sustainable access. The ICG mechanism, which has been used for decades for other vaccines, now includes mpox, offering a framework for international health organizations, donors, and manufacturers to cooperate on preparedness and response.
GeoVax's GEO-MVA program has achieved several milestones, including the manufacturing of GMP clinical product, alignment with the European Medicines Agency on an immune-bridging pathway, and identification of clinical sites for the pivotal study. The company is also developing next-generation technologies, such as MVA-X for potential single-dose protection and microarray-based delivery to simplify administration. These efforts aim to expand supply and address global access challenges.

As the stockpile infrastructure develops, GeoVax believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources are needed to enhance supply availability and manufacturing capacity.
