Garuda Indonesia is set to modernize its baggage system by adopting a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The national flag carrier announced the change on July 14, 2026, as part of a broader service transformation to provide greater clarity and consistency for passengers.
Under the new policy, baggage allowances will be determined by the number of pieces and maximum weight per piece, replacing the previous weight-based system. Depending on the route, travel class, and fare category, passengers may check up to two pieces, with each piece weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms, for a total of up to 64 kilograms. For tickets issued before September 1, 2026, the existing weight-based allowance will still apply, even for travel after that date.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the Piece Concept reflects the company's commitment to a modern, transparent travel experience. "Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure," Mills said.
For domestic Economy Class, the allowance increases from 20 kg to one piece of 23 kg. Business and First Class passengers on domestic routes will receive two pieces of up to 32 kg each, up from 30 kg and 40 kg respectively, totaling 64 kg. On international routes, Economy Class allowance rises from 30 kg to two pieces of 23 kg each (46 kg total). Business and First Class on international flights will receive two pieces of 32 kg each (64 kg total), up from 40 kg and 50 kg under the old policy.
The change aligns Garuda Indonesia with global industry standards, as the Piece Concept is widely adopted worldwide. Mills noted, "Its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation, support more efficient baggage handling and provide passengers with greater certainty, including when connecting to international flight networks."
