Frontieras North America and Western Fuels have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a mine-mouth FASForm™ processing facility at the Dry Fork Mine near Gillette, Wyoming. This collaboration aims to scale Frontieras's patented technology that converts coal into ultra-low-sulfur diesel and other valuable products, potentially reshaping the economics of coal utilization in the region.

The proposed facility would initially process up to approximately 2.7 million tons of coal annually, with the capacity to expand to 5.4 million tons at full build-out. The MOU outlines long-term agreements covering the facility site, coal feedstock supply, and Western Fuels' commitment to purchase the ultra-low-sulfur diesel produced. Additionally, Western Fuels Association's transportation capabilities could be leveraged to move FASForm™ product streams, enhancing logistical efficiency.

This initiative aligns with Frontieras's strategy to deploy its FASForm™ Solid Carbon Fractionation technology across Wyoming and the West through mine-mouth facilities and its FASGEN™ co-location platform for coal-fired power plants. The technology employs a continuous, closed-loop process that converts coal into FASCarbon™, ultra-low-sulfur diesel, and naphtha. Under the MOU, FASCarbon™ produced at the Wyoming facility could be transported to Western Fuels Association member utilities under separate commercial terms or sold into international markets.

The significance of this project extends beyond the companies involved. By demonstrating a viable path to produce cleaner fuels from coal, the facility could help address energy security concerns while reducing the environmental footprint of coal use. Ultra-low-sulfur diesel is in high demand for transportation and industrial applications, and its production from domestic coal could reduce reliance on imported petroleum.

Furthermore, the project is expected to create economic opportunities in Wyoming, a state historically dependent on coal mining. As coal-fired power plants face increasing pressure to reduce emissions, technologies like FASForm™ offer a way to sustain coal's role in the energy mix while transitioning to cleaner outputs. The successful deployment of this facility could serve as a model for other coal-producing regions, potentially spurring similar investments.

Frontieras North America, headquartered in Houston, Texas, is already constructing its first commercial-scale facility in Mason County, West Virginia. The company holds an international patent portfolio spanning five continents, underscoring the global potential of its technology. The partnership with Western Fuels, an association of consumer-owned electric utilities, provides a ready market for the facility's products and strengthens the business case for the project.
