At a time when national conversations about firearms often revolve around politics and overlook personal responsibility, veteran firearms instructor and author Rick Billington is launching a new educational initiative designed to shift the focus toward what he believes matters most: responsible firearm ownership.
Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, has released his new book The Responsible Gun Owner, a practical guide aimed at helping civilian firearm owners understand the responsibilities that extend beyond purchasing or carrying a firearm. Alongside the book, he is introducing a six-part educational blog series titled The Responsible Gun Owner Series, which will begin publishing weekly starting July 12, 2026.
The initiative challenges common misconceptions by focusing on the mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making responsibilities that accompany the right to own and carry a firearm. "Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself," said Billington. "Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared."
The book explores deeper realities of civilian firearm ownership, emphasizing preparedness, personal accountability, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, legal understanding, and decision-making under stress. The accompanying blog series addresses critical topics often overlooked in traditional firearms training, including mindset over marksmanship, self-defense law, conflict avoidance, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control.
Billington, who brings decades of experience in law enforcement, conflict resolution, and civilian firearms education, believes many firearm owners place themselves at unnecessary risk by focusing solely on shooting skills. "The responsible gun owner should never view a firearm as the first answer to conflict," he explained. "The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary."
The educational campaign is hosted through Michigan Pistol Academy and aims to provide both new and experienced owners with a broader framework for responsible ownership. The series will be available through the Responsible Gun Owner Educational Series page, with weekly installments throughout the summer.
