FingerMotion Inc. (NASDAQ: FNGR) has announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BlueFlare Energy Solutions to jointly develop a distributed network of micro-scale edge AI inference compute sites across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The collaboration is centered on behind-the-meter natural gas-powered infrastructure and BlueFlare’s proprietary BALA™ load-following technology, which is designed to balance AI inference workloads with bitcoin mining operations to optimize energy utilization and site economics.
According to the company, the first proposed project, known as PR1, would combine existing bitcoin mining infrastructure with a planned 500-kilowatt containerized AI inference data center in Alberta. The company said the site is intended to serve as a prototype for a broader regional rollout of edge AI infrastructure, though the MOU and contemplated commercial terms remain nonbinding and subject to due diligence, definitive agreements and customary approvals.
The initiative highlights a growing trend of integrating AI compute with energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining to improve efficiency and reduce costs. By using behind-the-meter natural gas and load-following technology, the partners aim to create a flexible infrastructure that can dynamically allocate power between AI inference and bitcoin mining based on demand and energy prices. This approach could potentially lower the carbon footprint of both operations while maximizing returns.
FingerMotion, known for its mobile payment and recharge platform solutions in China, is diversifying into edge AI infrastructure. The company’s vision is to rapidly grow its user base through organic means and develop an ecosystem of users with high engagement rates. This new venture into edge AI compute in Canada represents a strategic expansion beyond its core business.
The MOU and the PR1 project are still in early stages, and no definitive agreements have been signed. The success of the prototype will be critical in determining whether the partners proceed with a broader rollout. The announcement comes as demand for edge AI inference capabilities grows, driven by applications in autonomous systems, smart cities, and industrial IoT.
