On November 18, a Central Texas veteran named Rico received news that would change his holiday season: a brand-new roof fully donated by Family Friend Roofing and Construction. The Round Rock-based roofing company stepped forward after learning that the same veteran had recently received a power wheelchair through community partner ShareTheWill Foundation. A simple morning call sparked a defining moment in the company's mission.
“When we launched, we knew giving back would be a pillar of our company,” said Lindsay Shapee, co-owner of Family Friend Roofing and Construction. “It’s who we are.” Lindsay, along with co-owners Josh Bovino and Aaron Bernard, built the company with service at its core. While early community buy-in developed gradually beyond the Round Rock Chamber and the Five Point Board of Realtors, one value quickly unified the leadership team: supporting military members and veterans. During a team call, Josh shared what Lindsay now fondly calls “another bright idea.” “He said, ‘I really want to donate a roof to a veteran for Christmas. How can we make that happen?’” What followed was weeks of coordination, conversations, and careful vetting to ensure the right family would receive the support.
The Family Friend Roofing and Construction team reached out to Matt Maples of USA Cares, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting post-9/11 veterans and their families. Though the process required thoughtful coordination, the introduction led to Rico, a veteran who already received assistance in the form of a power wheelchair through community advocates including Will Williams and ShareTheWill Foundation. Together, these organizations created a moment bigger than any one company. Family Friend Roofing coordinated a surprise reveal at Café Java, where Rico learned about the roof donation alongside community members and even Santa Claus. The event was both practical and deeply personal. “Being part of this was more than we asked for,” Lindsay said. “Watching our partners connect with Rico, hear his story, and truly understand his journey changed us.”
