U.S. Term Limits announced today that Dr. Ibraheem Samirah has agreed to serve as the Virginia State Chair for the organization. Dr. Samirah, a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, will spearhead the push for a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress.
Dr. Samirah emphasized the broad public support for term limits, noting that polls show over 80% of Americans favor them. "Now more than ever before, the need for term limits is crystal clear," he said. "For many, serving in Congress has become a lifelong entitlement rather than a public service. Term limits will help improve accountability, diversify Congress, and make government work better for all Americans."
The appointment comes as U.S. Term Limits, the largest grassroots term limits advocacy group, seeks to build momentum in Virginia. According to Philip Blumel, President of U.S. Term Limits, "We are honored to have Dr. Samirah leading our efforts in Virginia to pass term limits for Congress. Under his guidance, I am confident we will get our term limits resolution passed in Virginia."
Dr. Samirah brings a unique blend of private and public service experience. A dentist and business owner, he earned his B.A. in government from American University and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from Boston University. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2019, where he became known as a strong voice for reform and is respected by members of both political parties.
The effort to enact congressional term limits has gained traction across the country, with several states considering resolutions to call for a constitutional convention. U.S. Term Limits argues that term limits would break the dysfunction in Washington, D.C., and restore citizen representation. Dr. Samirah expressed optimism about Virginia's role in this movement: "The Old Dominion state is ready to join the growing roster of states calling for a constitutional amendment for congressional term limits."
