Desalination Projects in Latin America: A Report on 23 Flagship Initiatives

Vostock Capital has released a report titled "Desalination Projects Latin America," detailing 23 flagship desalination initiatives across Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil. The report underscores the growing importance of desalination technology in tackling water scarcity and supporting sustainable development in the region.

Among the highlighted projects is the El Abra Mill Project in Chile, valued at US $7.5 billion. Developed by Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco, the project includes a concentrator, a seawater desalination plant, and a desalinated water pumping system with a capacity of 500 liters per second. Another significant initiative is the Desalination Plant in Coquimbo Region, Chile, led by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP). With a budget of US $350 million, the plant will produce 1,200 liters per second of potable water for Coquimbo and La Serena.

In Peru, the Tía María Copper Project, developed by Southern Copper Corp at a cost of US $1.8 billion, features a 235 liters per second seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant. The water will be used exclusively for mining processes, supported by pumping, storage, and transport infrastructure. In Mexico, the Los Cabos, Baja California Sur project involves a US $85 million state-of-the-art desalination plant with a capacity of 250 liters per second, aiming to meet growing water demand sustainably.

Brazil's Ceará Seawater Desalination Plant, developed by Cagece for US $620 million, will supply potable water to over 720,000 people in Fortaleza. With a capacity of 1,000 liters per second, it stands as a flagship water resilience project in Brazil's semi-arid northeast. These projects collectively demonstrate a significant investment in water infrastructure across Latin America.

As part of the 2026 desalination agenda, Vostock Capital will host two exclusive technical site visits in Spain: the AcuaMed Desalination Plant in Murcia on May 13-14 and the ATL Desalination Plant in Llobregat on September 22-23. Professionals interested in participating can request further information from the company. More details about these visits are available on the Vostock Capital newsroom.
