The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal and a leading publication in cardiovascular medicine. Effective with the current issue, Maron will guide the journal’s editorial direction, continuing its tradition of publishing rigorous, practice-changing science for clinicians and researchers worldwide.
Maron is a board-certified cardiologist and a distinguished researcher in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. He serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine and director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His appointment underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science, according to Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. “His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success,” Miyamoto said.
Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who was editor-in-chief from 2004-2016. Maron expressed deep honor at taking on the role, stating, “I have pored over issues of Circulation since my early research career and marveled at the strength of the science and the rigorous standards.” He aims to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science published and fast-track information to readers with added transparency.
New features under Maron’s leadership include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world clinical practice, and a Patient’s Corner for the public. The journal will also introduce graphic abstracts, video commentaries, and an accelerated review timeline. Expanded weekly eTOC alerts will include brief summaries of articles, with additional upgrades rolling out in the first year.
Maron brings substantial editorial experience, having served as a reviewer for journals such as Circulation, The Lancet, and The New England Journal of Medicine. He has co-authored over 260 scientific publications and holds six patents. His research includes discovering novel molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis and using AI to automate clinical diagnosis. He is joined by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, along with 10 deputy editors covering topics from fundamental sciences to AI for process and science.
This leadership change is significant as Circulation continues to shape cardiovascular medicine globally. The journal’s editorial independence, upheld by the American Heart Association, ensures open dialogue essential for scientific discovery. Maron’s focus on precision medicine and pulmonary vascular disease may drive new insights into conditions affecting the blood vessels in the lungs and their impact on the heart.
