BioUtah Participates in National Symposium to Highlight Biotechnology's Role in National Security

On March 25, BioUtah, the trade association representing Utah's life sciences industry, participated in the Biotech Across America State Symposium in Washington, D.C. The event, organized by the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB), focused on the strategic importance of robust state and local biotechnology ecosystems in bolstering national security and economic resilience.

The symposium is part of the NSCEB's Biotech Across America Roadshow, which aims to highlight biotechnology's impact across the United States. The Commission, a bipartisan legislative advisory entity, published a comprehensive report in April 2025 with recommendations for Congress and the federal government. The roadshow engages with companies, academic institutions, workforce development programs, and policy initiatives driving the industry's future.

Utah plays a pivotal role in the U.S. biotech landscape. The state employs 180,000 people in the life sciences sector and generates $22 billion in GDP. It has garnered accolades as a startup state, reflecting its vibrant innovation ecosystem. BioUtah's participation underscores the importance of state-level contributions to national biotech goals.

The NSCEB's report to Congress emphasizes the need to advance and secure biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and associated technologies for U.S. national security. The Commission is preparing the United States for the bioindustrial revolution, recognizing biotechnology as a critical component of economic and defense strategies.

BioUtah's involvement in the symposium aligns with its mission to serve Utah's diverse life sciences industry, which includes medical device manufacturing, research and testing, biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals, and diagnostics. The association's members are key drivers of Utah's economy and healthcare advancements.

The symposium serves as a platform for collaboration among stakeholders, including the Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC), a non-profit public-private partnership, and the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), which works to integrate scientific expertise into policymaking. These organizations, along with BioUtah, are contributing to a national dialogue on biotechnology's role in securing America's future.
