International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to comprehensively modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube. This facility is the largest hydroelectric plant in Slovakia and a cornerstone of the nation's energy infrastructure, contributing approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity production.
The project entails the complete renewal and upgrade of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW. This modernization is critical for ensuring reliable and sustainable electricity generation for the long term, aligning with Slovakia's energy security and climate goals.
The contract is valued in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The scope of work includes the gradual refurbishment of the eight Kaplan turbine-generator units to the latest technical standards, aiming to improve efficiency, availability, and extend the technical service life of key equipment by at least 30 years.
ANDRITZ and VUJE will handle model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. The modernization will cover key turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. To minimize disruption, the work will be carried out sequentially, ensuring the plant remains operational during the upgrade.
