45Drives Expands SnapShield to Detect and Contain Ransomware Encryption and Data Exfiltration

45Drives, a provider of open-source data storage and compute solutions, has announced a significant expansion of its SnapShield cybersecurity platform. The update introduces Data Exfiltration Protection and a Centralized Management System, extending the platform's ability to detect and contain attacks at the storage server level. This matters because it addresses two critical consequences of modern ransomware: data encryption and data theft, offering a last line of defense when other security controls are bypassed.

SnapShield operates on a "ransomware-activated fuse," using real-time behavioral analysis to identify ransomware-like activity. When behavior crosses configured thresholds, SnapShield can sever the compromised client's connection to the server, containing the attack while allowing unaffected users to continue working. The new Data Exfiltration Protection capability extends this behavioral approach to suspicious file-access activity, such as sudden spikes in file reads or interaction with honey files—decoy files designed to lure attackers. If suspicious behavior is detected, SnapShield can alert administrators or automatically isolate the offending user or IP address, potentially stopping data theft before sensitive information leaves the environment.

Additionally, the Centralized Management System provides a single interface for monitoring multiple SnapShield deployments across servers, sites, or customer environments. This is particularly important for enterprises and managed service providers (MSPs) managing distributed infrastructure, as it reduces operational burden and enables faster threat response. Administrators can view active security events, user activity, analytics, and audit logs, and drill down into affected systems for investigation.

Dr. Doug Milburn, founder of 45Drives, emphasized the importance of server-side defense: "Traditional cybersecurity defenses remain essential, but no organization should build its security strategy around the assumption that ransomware will never get through them. The critical question is what happens when an attacker actually reaches the data. SnapShield puts another line of defense directly at that point - where it can identify dangerous behavior, isolate the source and prevent one compromised machine from becoming an organization-wide crisis."

SnapShield complements existing security infrastructure like firewalls, endpoint protection, and backups. Because it runs directly on the storage server, it adds protection where attackers can begin damaging or accessing critical data. The platform is agentless, reducing deployment complexity, and supports Rocky Linux and Ubuntu environments, as well as single-server and multi-node Ceph clusters via an Ansible playbook. Real-time email and system notifications keep administrators informed.

For recovery, SnapShield's Precision Restore capability gives administrators a detailed view of affected files, enabling selective rollback of corrupted data while leaving unaffected files intact. This, combined with behavioral detection and automatic isolation, dramatically limits the scope of a ransomware event. Milburn added, "The objective is containment. If something malicious gets through the traditional defenses, we want to stop the compromised system from continuing to damage or access the data, preserve normal operations everywhere we can, and give the IT team the information it needs to respond and recover precisely."

With these additions, SnapShield evolves from ransomware encryption defense into broader protection of mission-critical data, providing enterprises and MSPs the operational visibility needed to deploy protection at scale. For more information, visit 45Drives.com.
