Phoenix Area News: Fire Department Milestone, Library Naming, and More

The Phoenix Fire Department celebrated a significant milestone, marking its 140th anniversary with a commemorative event at Historic Fire Station 8. According to the City of Phoenix Newsroom, city leaders, department officials, and members of Local 493 gathered to honor generations of firefighters who have served the community since the department's inception in 1886. Originally established with a staff of 100 volunteer firefighters, the department now serves a population of approximately 1.7 million across more than 518 square miles, with nearly 2,000 professional firefighters. The event featured remarks from Mayor Kate Gallego and Fire Chief Mike Duran, highlighting the department's commitment to public safety and innovation.

In other news, the Phoenix Public Library has launched a community-wide campaign to name a new library at Estrella Civic Space. As reported by the City of Phoenix Newsroom, residents can participate in an online survey to select their preferred name from five finalists: Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, Manzanita, and Senita. The campaign runs until October 2, 2026, and aims to reflect the vibrancy of the Phoenix community. The chosen name will influence the library's design and require approval from the Library Advisory Board and the City of Phoenix Heritage Commission.

Chandler has appointed Deryck R. Lavelle as the new City Attorney, effective August 31, 2026. According to the Chandler News Center, Lavelle brings over 24 years of legal experience, having served in various roles within municipal and county government, private practice, and international law. Mayor Kevin Hartke praised Lavelle's understanding of municipal operations and his public-service background, which are expected to be assets to Chandler's legal department.

Infrastructure updates are also underway in the region. Gilbert Road in the Heritage District will experience lane restrictions starting August 17, as part of the Heritage Park development. The Gilbert Digital Newsroom reports that the road will be reduced to one lane in each direction until September 25, 2026, to accommodate the installation of medians. Meanwhile, the City of Chandler has approved a ground lease with Vesper Aviation to expand hangar capacity at Chandler Municipal Airport, addressing the growing demand for aircraft storage.

Community events continue to engage residents across the Valley. The Riparian Preserve in Gilbert is celebrating Parks for Pollinators Month with a series of events in September, focusing on bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Additionally, Mesa's Gateway Library has been named the world's best new public library, winning the 2026 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions/James Bennett Public Library of the Year Award. The library's innovative design and community impact were key factors in its selection.

These stories and more highlight the ongoing developments and community initiatives in the Phoenix area, reflecting a commitment to growth, innovation, and public engagement.
